BBC Power of Sport

This week it has been announced that the BBC Power of Sport Award, supported by Sport England, will be contested in all 12 BBC regions for the first time. This is a great opportunity to celebrate and showcase inspirational grassroots projects that are making a difference in local communities.

The Power of Sport Award has already been run successfully in the West Midlands for Two Years (info on previous winners can be found on the BBC website)

Entries can be submitted by projects themselves, participants or by NGBs, local authorities and CSPs. The criteria are relatively straight forward. Projects must:

• Involve a recognised sport
• Be based in England
• Demonstrate the power of sport to involve individuals and communities
• Be supported by a case study that brings the project to life

Projects are invited to provide evidence of their achievements in areas like:

• Increasing participation
• Sustainability
• Tackling the drop-off in participation after school age
• Reaching under-represented groups such as disabled people, black and minority ethnic groups, women and older people
• Reaching communities with poor access to sport

Entry forms can be found on the BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/8296653.stm Completed forms should be emailed to powerofsport@bbc.co.uk or posted to Gill Thompson, Power of Sport Award, BBC Birmingham, The Mailbox, Birmingham, B1 1AY

NOTE: Entries are going to central email and postal addresses. The BBC will then sort them out by region and distribute them to the relevant judging panels

Entries must be received by 13:00 on Monday 2 November 2009. An independent judging panel will assess the entries for each region and select a winner, which will be announced on the relevant BBC local radio and regional television programmes in late November and early December
