Mature Movers Class

A new exercise class will get East Hampshire’s over 50s staying fit and fighting high blood pressure, heart disease and even osteoporosis.

Mature Movers, held in Petersfield, focuses on an age group which is thinking about slowing down just when it is vital they keep exercising. The class is supported by East Hampshire District Council and the Get Active Partnership.

The fifth decade is traditionally a more sedate time of life but health experts say the older you are the more important it is to keep active.

The Mature Movers class, held weekly in the Avenue Pavilion, helps with aerobic fitness as well as flexibility, mobility and strength.

Councillor Mrs Jennifer Gray, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles and Community at East Hampshire District Council, said: “Exercise is such an important part of a healthy lifestyle but even more so as we get older. It can help to keep your bones strong therefore helping to ward off osteoporosis, reduce your blood pressure, lower your cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and help to keep your immune system strong. Even a little exercise can help and once you start to become fitter you will gradually be able to do more!”

The class is run by Karen Lewis, a qualified Extend Instructor, and starts on Wednesday 16th September between 2-3pm at the Avenue Pavilion. The first class is free, thereafter it will cost £3.50 per session.

Louise Christie, Active Lifestyle Co-ordinator said: “Karen’s Mature Movers classes are fun and friendly and will help to get you in shape in an enjoyable and motivating environment. Along with some great music, the classes have a mixture of dance and traditional aerobics moves and are easy to follow but definitely not boring! You will look forward to coming each week and will enjoy meeting other like-minded people too.”
