East Hampshire District Council is holding a free training day for would-be walk leaders on Saturday 3rd October in Petersfield.
The Walking to Health Scheme has recently recruited twelve walkers from across the county as walk leaders and is hoping that the training day in October will generate similar interest in East Hampshire. The training day is being held in Petersfield but we are looking for volunteers throughout the district.
Louise Christie, Active Lifestyles Co-ordinator at East Hampshire District Council, supports the local Walking to Health Scheme in East Hampshire. She said: “We have a very successful Walking to Health Scheme in the district which is supported by a dedicated, enthusiastic and committed group of volunteers. To sustain and develop the Walks to Health we are always looking for new volunteers to support the local walks.”
Councillor Mrs Jennifer Gray, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles and Community at East Hampshire District Council, is keen for as many people as possible to get involved. She said: “You really don’t have to be exceptionally fit, you just need enthusiasm for walking in our beautiful local countryside. The success of the scheme is due to the network of highly dedicated volunteers who support each of the walks.”
The information and training day on Saturday 3rd October will be held at the Heath Children’s Centre in Petersfield from 10am to 4pm, and a free lunch will be provided.
The day will give information about the National Walking the Way to Health Initiative, local Walking to Health schemes in East Hants, and will also include a walk through scenic Petersfield.
On completion of the training day, those attending will receive a certificate and will be able to lead local walks under the Walking to Health Scheme although anyone attending is under no obligation to lead walks after the training day. Commitment to local Walks to Health is flexible and dependent upon volunteers’ own availability.
Places are limited therefore booking is essential. For more information and to book a place, please call Louise Christie on 01730 234067, email louise.christie@easthants.gov.uk.
