Non contact Boxing
The Petersfield School run course saw 12-15-year-olds pull on the red gloves and shadow box, skip and punch bags. Under the gaze of instructor Steve Penberthy, Royal Navy Boxing Coaches Development Administrator, the pupils worked on the attributes needed to become a top boxer.
Mr Penberthy said: “The package has seen the youngsters pick a lot of new skills which will give them courage, determination and improve their fitness. They can take the skills they have learnt into other sports. As it is non-contact it’s completely safe and suitable for all ages and the skills they learn can really benefit the children.”
On the last day of the course the trainees were watched by two master of the pugilistic art - Kevin Green, Senior Amateur Boxing Association Coach and Lt Lucy O’Connor, ranked fifth in the world and a hopeful for Britain's Olympic Boxing team in 2012. The star duo judged the youngsters’ techniques and training methods as parents looked on. Certificates were presented to all those who passed the course.
Councillor Jennifer Gray said: “This is a fantastic course for these young boys. It helps with their balance and co-ordination and teaches a range of skills which they will find applicable to other sports.”
The ten week course was funded by Sport England as part of the ‘Sports Unlimited’ programme. Sports Unlimited is a government initiative to increase the amount of PE in secondary schools from three hours a week to five hours.
