Get Active for FREE!

Get Up, Get Out & Get Active

Expanding waistlines, smoking and lack of exercise are creating a country of coach potatoes, putting ever increasing demands on the NHS system and significantly affecting the health of the nation.

In Hampshire, for example, it is predicted that by 2012 there will be a 20.7% increase in the number of adults who are very overweight. Sport Hampshire, Hampshire County Council and all our district & borough authorities are committed to ensuring that the residents of Hampshire have the opportunity to get active and at the same time have fun without breaking the purse strings.

As part of the Get Active campaign, Sport Hampshire & IOW with leisure and community centres across Hampshire, are offering free/discounted activities throughout April 2009 to encourage people to get off the sofa and to get active.

Councillor Margaret Snaith, Executive Member for Recreation, Heritage and Communities at Hampshire County Council, said: “What a great way this is for anyone feeling the credit crunch to join in the fun and get active. I’m really pleased to see us working in partnership with Sport Hampshire in this way as part of our commitment towards tackling the nation’s obesity problem. So why not go with your family and try canoeing or meet new friends in your local exercise class and all for free.”

Simply go to www.sporthampshire.co.uk before 5 April to find out which centres are participating, which activities are on offer and to download your voucher(s). Or, contact the Sport Hampshire & IOW team for more information on 01962 845178 or email us at sporthampshireiow@hants.gov.uk.
