Walking hailed as excellent exercise as new walk launched in Kingsley
Going for a walk has been hailed as one of the best exercises anyone can do as a new Walking to Health scheme is launched in Kingsley.
East Hampshire District Council runs a programme of short health walks with trained walk leaders aimed mainly at people who take little or no exercise.
Louise Christie, Active Lifestyle Officer for East Hampshire District Council says: “I have been involved with the Walking for Health initiative for the last two years and believe it to be one of the best physical activity programmes I have worked with, and it’s free to attend!
“Our health walks provide an easy way of getting regular exercise. There is compelling evidence of the benefits of moderate physical activity. Those who exercise enjoy greater life expectancy with reduced risks of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, colonic cancer and osteoporosis. Walking can also be a catalyst for connecting people with many other aspects of health, such as healthy eating, stopping smoking and relaxation.
“We are very lucky to have four dedicated local volunteers, Colin and Pat Langrish, Gill Marsden and Sally Priestley, who can’t wait to get started and are really looking forward to helping local people gain their confidence as they become fitter and healthier.”
The new walk is intended to be fully inclusive and will be suitable for both walkers and also wheelchair and buggy users. It will take place on the first Monday of each month from Monday 3 October meeting at the Kingsley Centre, Main Road, Kingsley GU35 9ND starting at 10.30am.
It will last for approximately one hour and afterwards there is the chance to socialise and have refreshments.
The EHDC scheme currently has 14 regular walks starting around the district. If anyone would like to join a walk or train as a Walking for Health Volunteer Walk Leader contact the Scheme Co-ordinator, Louise Christie, on 01730 234067 or email louise.christie@easthants.gov.uk.
