Calling all rising sports stars – apply now for funding and support

The scheme, which is administered by Hampshire County Council in partnership with Southampton City Council and Sport Hampshire & IOW, helps support rising sports stars reach world class podiums.

Since it started in 2008, almost 400 of Hampshire’s most promising sportsmen and women have received funding, with many more benefitting from free access to training facilities.  Most recently, East Hants hockey star and England Under 18 team member, Sam Hatherley has been supported by HTAS.

National level athletes can receive a range of benefits, including a monetary grant, free access to leisure centres, fast track physiotherapy, a free bus pass from local bus companies First and Stagecoach, as well as sports science support from Southampton Solent University.  Regional and county level performers can also benefit from fast track physiotherapy services.

At a time when costs associated with training and competition are on the increase, the scheme is seen by many current and previous recipients as a much needed injection of support.  Annabel Vose, World Champion 420 Sailor and HTAS athlete commented:

''Sailing is an expensive sport and so the support from HTAS has been a huge help. Fitness is a key element of my training programme and the HTAS free access to leisure centres and bus pass enables me to attend swimming and land training sessions several times a week. Going by bus also allows me to be independent which helps my parents who have to do most of the international travel."

Sport Hampshire & IOW Partnership Director, Julie Amies commented: “Hampshire has a strong sporting heritage, with many exceptional sportsmen and women living in the county.  The Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme goes some way to providing much needed support to these committed, talented and determined sportsmen and women.  We look forward to receiving applications and supporting our local athletes achieve their sporting ambitions.”

Applications are free and straightforward.  The deadline for applications is Friday 14th October.  Full details, including an application form and scheme criteria can be accessed online at www.sporthampshireiow.co.uk/talentedathletes
