Can you run a walk?

Walkers wanting to make new friends, improve their fitness and explore the beautiful Hampshire countryside can learn how to run an organised walk at a forthcoming training day.

East Hampshire District Council is holding an informal, fun and free training day for would-be walk leaders on Wednesday 30 March in Petersfield.

Last September 25 volunteers from across the county qualified as walk leaders and
Louise Christie, Active Lifestyles Co-ordinator at East Hampshire District Council is hoping this training day will generate a similar response. "We are looking for people with enthusiasm and a friendly, approachable manner."

She added: “We have a very successful Walking for Health Scheme in the district which is going from strength to strength and is supported by an enthusiastic and friendly group of volunteers. We are always looking for new volunteers to support the local walks."

There are currently 14 regular Walking for Health walks across East Hampshire.

Councillor Mrs Jennifer Gray, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles and Community at East Hampshire District Council, is keen for as many people as possible to get involved, saying “The East Hampshire Walking for Health Scheme has experienced tremendous success over the years and has seen many people improve their health and wellbeing by taking part in this enjoyable and sociable activity.”

“Volunteer support can consist of leading the walks, organising social get-togethers, planning walk routes or simply being a helper. You really don’t have to be exceptionally fit, you just need enthusiasm for walking in our beautiful local countryside."

The training day on Wednesday 30 March will be held at the EHDC Council Offices in Penns Place, Petersfield, from 10am to 4pm and a free lunch will be provided for those who attend.

The day will give information about the National Walking for Health initiative, local Walking for Health schemes in East Hants and will also include a walk through a beautiful nature reserve.

On completion of the training day, those attending will receive a certificate and be able to lead local walks under the Walking for Health Scheme. Commitment to local Walks for Health is flexible and dependent upon volunteers’ own availability.

Places are limited therefore booking is essential. For more information and to book a place, please call Louise Christie on 01730 234067, email louise.christie@easthants.gov.uk or visit www.getactivenow.org.uk .
