Women’s Running Group
Women’s running group under starter’s orders
A women’s running group is starting up in Petersfield in January aimed at newcomers and those who haven’t pulled on a tracksuit and trainers for many years.
The group will be run by Joanne Heron, a fully trained group leader, with the enrolment evening to be held on Monday 17 January at the Taro Leisure Centre between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Running sessions will start the following week.
Joanne said: “We genuinely support the complete beginner, regardless of age, ability, shape or size. Sessions will be progressive and fun, starting with brisk walking and building up to gentle jogging.”
The group will be part of the Women’s Running Network scheme which has more then 3,000 members nationwide. It is officially recognised by Sport England and backed by England Athletics. The Women’s Running Network philosophy is to give all women, whatever their age, size or ability the opportunity to run together to improve their health, fitness, confidence and safety.
Louise Christie, Active Lifestyle Co-ordinator from East Hampshire District Council, fully supports and endorses the project.
She said: “There are so many women who would love to go running but are either too self conscious, lack confidence or are afraid for their own personal safety. This project gives all women the opportunity to start running at a beginner’s level and also to meet other like-minded people. Everyone is welcome to join, whatever their age, size or ability.”
