Hampshire Talented Athletes Scheme Open!!
Talented Athletes wanted
Applications for the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) are open until 15th October. Athletes from across Hampshire are invited to apply for support with training, equipment, travel and physiotherapy, as well as monetary grants.
The scheme is administered by Hampshire County Council, in partnership with Southampton and Portsmouth City Councils who together provide support services to help Hampshire’s talented athletes reach world class podiums. Since it started in 2008, more than 300 of Hampshire’s most promising sportsmen and women have benefitted from the scheme.
National level athletes can receive a range of benefits, including a monetary grant, free access to leisure centres, fast track physiotherapy, a free bus pass from local bus companies including Bluestar, First and Stagecoach, as well as sports science support from Southampton Solent University. Regional and county level performers can also benefit from fast track physiotherapy services.
Table tennis star, Tressa Armitage, currently ranked number 2 nationally for her age group, benefitted from HTAS throughout 2010: "It is really important for me to compete in Europe as well as at home and the support I received from the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme has helped with the costs involved in doing this. It has also helped me to practice at my local leisure centre and means I can make use of other training facilities such as the swimming pool and gym as well."

Hampshire County Councillor Margaret Snaith Tempia, Executive Member for Culture and Recreation commented: “Training and competing at the highest level in sport can be incredibly costly for athletes and their parents. We are very proud of the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme which helps so many of our talented and promising athletes to fulfil their potential through provision of essential support services.”
Applications must be submitted by 15th October. Full details, including an application form and scheme criteria can be accessed online at www.sporthampshireiow.co.uk.
