New Walking Group for Sheet

A new Walking for Health groups is to be launched, giving the successful scheme a walk for every day of the working week.

The latest Walking for Health (WfH) group will set off on Fridays, and has been created because some existing walks around the Petersfield area are already close to capacity.

The new walk, starting from 17 September at 10am, from the Half Moon pub in Sheet, has been organised by Terry Doyle, a local Petersfield resident and trained Walk Leader, along with help and support from Louise Christie, the WfH Co-ordinator at EHDC.

Terry, who became involved with WfH in 2004, said: "I enjoy walking and felt WfH gave me the opportunity to share my enjoyment with others. The original Petersfield WfH group was formed in May 2004 and has gradually grown from just a few walkers to one of the most successful walking groups in the district."

He added: "I decided that a walk from Sheet would serve two purposes, one to give more people the chance to walk in amiable company, and two, to take some of the pressure off the Petersfield group - forty odd people is a large number to take for a walk in any location let alone the middle of a busy town on market day! Now the Petersfield area is well served by WfH groups with Buriton on Mondays, Liss on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Petersfield on Wednesdays and Sheet on Fridays, so there is ample opportunity for people to have a walk followed by a cup of coffee with like-minded people. Walking is great exercise and is good for the mind, body and soul!"

Louise Christie from EHDC is delighted by the dedication and commitment of all of the Volunteer Walk Leaders who help run the WfH scheme throughout the district.

"They provide a wonderful service for the local community and are not only helping people get fit and healthy, but are also helping people to make new friends and socialise."
