Free Training for Volunteer Walk Leaders
Free Training for Volunteer Walk Leaders
East Hampshire District Council is holding an informal, fun and free training day for would-be walk leaders in Petersfield.
Last October 20 walkers from across the district qualified as walk leaders and Get Active East Hampshire is hoping that the next training day, on Thursday 22 April, will generate a similar response. Organisers are looking for volunteers throughout the district. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a friendly, approachable manner.
Louise Christie, Active Lifestyles Co-ordinator at East Hampshire District Council, supports the local Walking to Health Scheme in East Hampshire.
“We have a very successful Walking for Health Scheme in the district which is supported by an enthusiastic and friendly group of volunteers. To sustain and develop Walking for Health we are always looking for new volunteers to support the local walks.”
Councillor Jennifer Gray, Portfolio Holder for Lifestyles, at East Hampshire District Council, is keen for as many people as possible to get involved, she said:
“The East Hampshire Walking for Health Scheme has experienced tremendous success over the years and has seen many people improve their health and wellbeing by taking part in this enjoyable and sociable activity.
Volunteer support can consist of planning the walk routes, organising social get-togethers, leading the walks or simply being a helper. You really don’t have to be exceptionally fit, you just need enthusiasm for walking in our beautiful local countryside.
The success of the scheme is due to the network of superb volunteers who support each of the walks in a variety of ways.”
The information and training day on Thursday 22 April will be held at the Salvation Army Hall in Petersfield from 10am-4pm and a free lunch will be provided for those who attendance.
The day will give information about the National Walking for Health Initiative, local Walking for Health schemes in East Hampshire and will also include a walk through scenic Petersfield.
On completion of the training day, those attending will receive a certificate and be able to lead local walks under the Walking for Health Scheme. Those attending are under no obligation to lead walks after the training day. Commitment to local Walks for Health is flexible and dependent upon volunteers’ own availability.
Places are limited therefore booking is essential. For more information and to book a place, please call Louise Christie on 01730 234067, email louise.christie@easthants.gov.uk
